Goris to Yerevan

We were delighted to rise to a sunny day in Goris, a sharp contrast to the rainy and gloomy previous day and we were looking forward to the visit to Tatev monastery.

Tatev monastery

Nestled within the rugged terrain of southern Armenia, the Tatev Monastery stands as a testament to the country’s rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess. Perched atop a rocky plateau overlooking the Vorotan Gorge, this medieval masterpiece has captivated visitors for centuries.

The origins of the Tatev Monastery can be traced back to the 9th century when it was established as a centre of religious and intellectual activity. Named after St. Eustathius (Eustathios-Statevos-Tatev), the monastery played a pivotal role in the spiritual and cultural life of medieval Armenia. Over the years, it expanded in size and importance, attracting scholars, theologians, and artists. It served as a hub of religious education and manuscript production, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of Armenian literature and religious teachings.

The complex comprises several structures, including the St. Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God Church), St. Gregory Church, and numerous auxiliary buildings. The intricate stone carvings, ornate decorations, and intricate frescoes showcase the skill and craftsmanship of the medieval Armenian architects and artists.

While it is possible to take the road to the monastery, we opted without doubt for the most thrilling way to reach the Tatev Monastery, the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway. This engineering marvel holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop double-track reversable cable car. As we soar above the picturesque Vorotan Gorge, we are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, adding an unforgettable element of adventure to the visit.

The Tatev Monastery has undergone extensive restoration and preservation efforts over the years, ensuring its longevity and accessibility to visitors. The monastery’s cultural and historical significance, coupled with its architectural splendor and spectacular natural surroundings, has made it a popular destination for tourists from around the world.

Zorats Karer (Karahunj)

Zorats Karer, also known as Karahunj, is an ancient archaeological site located in the Syunik Province close to the village of Sisian. Often referred to as the “Armenian Stonehenge,” Zorats Karer is a megalithic complex consisting of numerous standing stones arranged in a circular pattern.

Zorats Karer is believed to date back to the Bronze Age, with some estimates suggesting that it was constructed around 7500-5500 BCE, making it one of the oldest megalithic sites in the world. The complex consists of around 223 standing stones, or menhirs, which vary in size and shape. The tallest stone reaches a height of approximately 3.5 meters (11 feet).

This enigmatic site has sparked numerous debates and discussions among archaeologists, historians, and researchers regarding its purpose and significance. Some researchers believe that it served as an astronomical observatory or a site for observing celestial events due to its alignment with specific astronomical phenomena, including the sunrise and sunset during solstices and equinoxes. Others propose that it had religious or ritualistic significance, possibly serving as a burial ground or a ceremonial site. They argue that the alignment of the stones with celestial bodies may be coincidental rather than intentional. Alternative theories range from it being an ancient burial site to a defensive structure or even a site related to water management.

Shaki waterfall

The last stop for the day was the Shaki waterfall, also known as Goy Gol Waterfall, is situated in the Goygol National Park, near the city of Shaki. It is renowned for its pristine beauty, where water tumbles down a series of rocky cliffs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The waterfall is fed by the Goy Gol (Blue Lake), a glacial lake. The verdant surroundings of the waterfall create a tranquil ambiance, providing a serene escape into nature’s embrace. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and trekking.
